UK New Artist Collective #3

Building on the success of the People, Place, and Practice programme, in 2025 UK New Artists (UKNA) launched a test of a new multi-site format. This new and exciting iteration of the programme saw 16 artists take part in micro-residencies across four locations in the East Midlands; Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln, and Worksop, which I was selected to take part.

As part of the residency team at BackLit in Nottingam, I had the priviledge in working with artists Sarah Al-Sarraj, Helen Li Newbold and Alexander Lea, under the guidance of local artist Raheel Khan, exploring the “Language of Machines”.

Through collaboration, research into BackLit’s heritage and exploration of individual skills and mediums, we quickly began to experiment using spacial audio, physical installation and immersive projection. As someone who has primarily worked with immersive projection, it was eyeopening to embrace the methodical approaches of craft based installation, as well as the timing and empahsis brought with direction sound.
